MTV Video Music Awards tahun ini diadakan dengan cara yang agak berbeda. Kalau setiap tahunnya acara penghargaan ini diadakan di panggung besar dengan lautan fans yang menunggu artis favorit tampil, pandemi memaksa para artis tampil tanpa teriakan penonton.
Pemberian penghargaan diadakan di beberapa tempat outdoor demi mematuhi protokol kesehatan. Green screen raksasa memainkan peranan yang siginifikan. Para performer bisa menunjukkan penampilan maksimalnya dengan bantuan permainan efek di layar hijau. Bahkan penampilan BTS dari Korea Selatan, tampak nyata seperti di New York.
Saking kerennya, beberapa kritikus di AS menyebut MTV VMA 2020 sebagai contoh acara berskala besar yang tetap bisa dilaksanakan meski di tengah pandemi. Mereka menyarankan penyelenggara Emmy dan Oscar mendatang, belajar dari konsep MTV VMA 2020.
Untuk tahun ini, Little Monsters harus berbangga karena Lady Gaga menjadi perebut penghargaan terbanyak tahun ini. Mulai dari artist of the year, song of the year, best collaboration, dan best cinematography untuk Rain On Me. Ia juga menerima penghargaan baru yang bernama tricon, penghargaan untuk icon musik, seni peran, fashion, dan aktivisme. Keren banget!
Teman duetnya, Ariana Grande, juga menerima empat penghargaan VMA, berkat Rain On Me dan juga kolaborasinya dengan Justin Bieber, Stuck With U. The Weeknd menyusul dengan menerima dua penghargaan untuk lagu hitsnya, Blinding Lights.
Army juga pasti lagi berbangga dengan empat penghargaan yang berhasil dimenangkan BTS. Mulai dari best group, lagu pop dan K-Pop terbaik untuk On, dan best choreography. Nggak sia-sia deh berjuang voting!
Buat para Swifties, Taylor Swift berhasil menerima penghargaan untuk video musik lagu The Man sebagai video dengan best direction. Pasti tahu dong yang menyutradarai video tersebut adalah Taylor sendiri. Keren!
